Need temporary spa staff? Make sure you stay on the right side of the law
Whether it’s through unexpected sickness, planned maternity leave, or seasonal fluctuations in trade, covering a temporary spa staff shortage can be a real headache for spas and salons.
Employment laws don’t just apply to permanent staff; temporary or casual workers are subject to many of the same rules and regulations, and falling foul of these laws can land employers in a lot of hot water!
We’ve all heard the horror stories of businesses fined heavily for employing illegal workers, and since the introduction of the Immigration Act in 2016, the requirements placed on employers to check their employees’ immigration status have got even tougher.
Businesses found guilty of employing illegal workers – whether temporary or permanent – can now face fines of up to £20,000 per worker, and a prison sentence of up to five years.
To stay on the right side of the law, employers must be able to show that they have carried out the necessary right to work checks on staff, which includes checking and copying original documents such as passports, birth certificates and official National Insurance documents.
Employment rights of temporary spa staff
Another issue that can crop up for temporary spa staff is employers not being aware of or understanding their employment rights. Casual or temporary workers have many of the same rights as permanent members of staff, including holiday entitlement and equal treatment. After 12 weeks, temporary spa staff are entitled to the same level of pay, pension enrolment and paid annual leave as their permanent counterparts.
Are beauty recruitment agencies the solution?
Appointing beauty therapist recruitment agencies to find temporary spa staff for you is often the easiest, quickest and safest way to avoid many of the pitfalls of directly recruiting casual workers, but many spas have concerns about the quality of agency therapists.
If you are going to employ the services of a beauty recruitment agency, how can you ensure the therapists who turn up are going to be professional, well-trained and reliable?
This is why, at Total Spa Solutions, we work so closely with both our spa clients and our beauty therapists to ensure we can offer the Total Spa guarantee of service.
Our therapists are all fully qualified and receive ongoing Total Spa training and development to our high standards.
We work closely with you so we understand your MO and your brand values; then make sure our therapists are fully briefed so they can hit the ground running on their first day.
